The Nature of The Creator

As we go about our day, we keep ourselves busy with work, family, hygiene and our favorite pastimes.  We may not think about the Creator or what the role of the Creator is in our daily affairs.  Perhaps we feel that the Creator is so far away from us that we can’t begin to understand the point of having our own spirituality.

The truth is that the Creator is around us—in everything in our environment, within our very selves, within all people and in the Universe.  There is none else beside Him.

When we begin to understand that everything is an expression of the Creator, the Divine Essence, we see things in a different light.  We think of our problems as less severe, our enemies as lessons, our gifts and abilities as ways of bringing greater Light into the world.  We begin to see that everything is a part of us and ourselves as a part of everything.

Perhaps this is a mind-boggling concept.  Perhaps it is far outside our ability to grasp.  How can this be?  Perhaps we have known from our Bible lessons that the Creator is omnipotent—all powerful; omniscient—all-seeing; and omnipresent—in all things.  But we don’t take the time to think of what this really means.  It means that the Creator is literally part and parcel of everything in the entire Universe.  We are each but a cell in the great body of the Creator.

Does this suggest that we hold the consciousness of the Creator?  Yes and no.  Even though we are a part of the Creator, just as our arms are a part of us, they do not contain our consciousness, as we do not contain the consciousness of the Creator.  However, it is our role in life to come closer to that consciousness.  In fact, we could say that this is the essence of life:  to come closer to the Creator.  This is called similarity of form.  Our role and purpose in life is to become like the Creator.

If we are to become like the Creator, we must know what the Creator is like.  What are his attributes?  Simply put, the Creator is all-giving.  The Creator bestows, gives to all creation, ultimate good.  Therefore, all things work out for ultimate good, even though we may find it difficult to see that in the present moment.

It is so difficult for us to see that all things work out for good because of our ego-involvement and the perspective that we have.  If something does not go our own way, we have the mindset that it is bad.  But think of all the times in our lives that we have thought that something we originally considered bad as turning into a blessing in disguise.  Sometimes we are temporarily sidelined, if you will, so that something better, something with greater benefit, comes our way.  It may be a matter of days, weeks, months or even years before we conclude, in the final analysis, that, yes, something that we originally viewed as negative turned out for the best.

Is there a way, then, that we can hasten positive things to come our way?  Of course it is helpful if we strengthen our connection to the Creator.  Since this is the ultimate meaning of life, it is in our best interest to work on our connection.  But what does it mean to become like the Creator?  If the Creator is the giver, and it gives the Creator great pleasure to do so, then our goal is to also give.  Perhaps you have heard the expression to give to receive.  We may be familiar with the expression, “It is better to give than to receive.”  Indeed, to imitate the Creator by giving is one of the greatest things that we do in our lives.  But if that is so, then does it mean that we must remain penniless?  Ideally, we should give until it hurts.  But we are not meant to drive ourselves into poverty, rather, to share our portion so that each person is elevated to the level we, ourselves, have achieved.

This certainly applies to our physical, material property.  Let no one go hungry.  If someone is cold, give them your coat.  If they are hungry, share your slice of bread.  If someone is too weak to climb the stairs, give them your shoulder to lean on.  But this also applies to our comprehension of the Light.

I found myself in a hospital some time back.  While I was there, I was not only able to make some interesting observations about my fellow patients, but I was also able to spread a little Light—letting them know that they are beloved of G_d and worthy children of the Creator.  So it works for our own good that we should spread the Light that we have been given.  In this way, we ensure that our good will continue to cycle from us to others, just as the good of the Creator comes into our lives.

But why and how does the good of the Creator come to us?  The Creator, as we have already stated, is the giver of ultimate good.  We think that our supply comes from the work we do, our boss, our customers, and so forth.  But if we can change our perspective and realize that our good, our supply comes from the Creator, we have won half the battle—the battle with ourselves.

Now let us look at why the Creator gives us our good by making a comparison to a story.  Imagine that a man has a friend who means a great deal to him.  Perhaps this person has been a friend in a way that supersedes the term of friendship.  So the man wishes to reward his friend by serving him a great feast.  He spends days formulating the menu—all of the foods that his dear friend enjoys.  Then he invites his friend to his home to surprise him with the feast.  He tells his friend that the food is all for him.  The friend, in shock, because no one has ever done such a thing for him before, so he thinks himself unworthy, declines the temptation to become a glutton at this marvelous table.  The man is sad.  He wanted so much to give this meal to his friend.  He begs with his friend, “Please eat all of these things that I have had prepared for you.”  The friend insists, “No, I just can’t eat this food.  It is too much.”  The begging and denials go on for a long time.  Finally the man says, “If you will not eat this food for your own good, then, please, take and eat it for my sake, for it would give me great pleasure to watch you enjoy this food.”  At last, the friend thanks him and gives in, accepting the wonderful gift of food that the man prepared.

And this is the way of things in our world.  The Creator has given us great amounts of good, a vast world of gifts—food, clothing, talents, entertainment—many wondrous things.  And we, too often, reply, “No, I am not worthy.”  Then the Creator says, “But please accept these gifts for my sake, for I would take great pleasure in your having all of the things you ever wanted.”  Once we understand this truth, accepting these gifts in order to bestow pleasure unto the Creator, we have accomplished the similarity of form and our needs and wants become fulfilled.

Perhaps you think it is a mind game—tricking your own mind to turn the reality you know inside out.  But when we move from the consciousness of receiving for the sake of our self alone, to receiving for the sake of others, particularly the Creator, then the Light comes on within us, in our daily experience and in the world at large.

Oh, yes, it is possible to go through life believing that we, and we alone, have the power over what will happen in our lives.  We may be so inundated with blockages in the path of the things we want in our lives—jobs, relationships, our homes, our ambitions—that we are not ready to hear this.  But if we just become calm and tell the Creator that we are ready for his Light to come into our lives, that we will accept his good in order to grant him the pleasure of giving to us, to turn over our control to him, that our lives will have the chance to become whatever we dream they can become.  We have to say to our egos that they are not in charge of fulfilling our needs—that the Creator is our supply—and then we can rest that our good will come to us.

And what do we do when it does?  What does one say when given a gift?  It is appropriate to say, “Thank you” to the Creator.

What do we do if change does not take place?  Perhaps we are filled with doubt.  Perhaps we feel that we have beckoned for help from the Creator for so long and have been disappointed time and time again.  What then?  You must be certain—in your desires, in your intentions to create good and bring Light into the world, that what you seek is not merely for the stroking of your own ego.  Then you must be certain that what the Creator promises—ultimate good—will come to you.

The key here is to receive for the purpose of bestowal—bestowing good unto others, being a channel of good for the Creator and accepting his good in your own life in order to give pleasure to the Creator.  If we only seek to receive for self alone, we will not see change.  If we focus on money, we will not see change.  If we focus on the fulfillment of our relationship fantasies, we will not see change.  If we focus on having our desires fulfilled in order to give pleasure to the Creator and so that we can bestow his good onto others as well, then we are accomplishing the goal of bringing greater Light into the world.

And so to review, the Creator is the ultimate expression of good.  Everything he does is for good.  He is unchanging.  Therefore, it falls to us to change our perspective and realize that if we are seeing some part of our lives as bad, we need to step back away from the situation and put our egos in check.  Give the situation time—the good will manifest and we will understand the big picture sooner or later.

We accept the good that the Creator brings into our lives in order to bring pleasure to the Creator.  We accept the good the Creator brings into our lives in order to bestow his good unto others.  We receive for the sake of bestowal—giving to others.  In this way, we express our similarity of form with the Creator.  In this way, we give credit to the Source of all things.  In this way, we become thankful for all the blessings that come our way each day—from the breath we breathe to the bread we eat, from the friends who share our mindset, to our enemies who need our Light and from whom we learn our lessons.  In this way, we express our understanding that there is none else beside Him. And because this is so, all things work for ultimate good.

May you be richly blessed!
